Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
My early life experiences served to prepare me first hand for the work that I do in Multiculturalism and Diversity. I was born and raised in upstate New York by a first generation Italian American mother from Rochester, New York and an African American father who was raised in the Jim Crow south during the 1930s and 1940s. As a multi racial child, I was able to experience a wide range of cultures and issues that provided a deeper understanding of the similarities and differences that exist in society.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Communications from State University of New York at Brockport and a Master of Arts in 19th Century American History from Colorado State University. I have been teaching courses in African American History, Ethnic Studies and I have developed specialized courses and presentations for marginalized populations for the past 24 years.
Two of the more unique presentations I have developed were “William the Slave”, a living history presentation for K-12 children on the history of slavery and “The Power of Words” a presentation that focuses on the impact of language and exclusion that has been given over 50 times around the country to various organizations and educational settings.
I have been a diversity and multicultural consultant for the past twelve years and have presented at over 40 colleges and universities as well as numerous private businesses across the country. I was previously on the Executive Board of the National Academic Advising Association and the past president of the Summer Institute Advisory Board and the Multicultural Concerns Commission. I was the Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at the University of Kansas for three years. As of June 1, 2015 I will be serving as the Director of the Office of Student Cultural Diversity at the University of Nevada, Reno.
I utilize my upbringing, personal experiences and my educational training to develop the most effective approach in addressing issues of cultural awareness and cultural competency. I look forward to the opportunity to serve the needs of your organization or institution. Contact Blane.
